Blog: Is there a right time to write? | How To Write A Book

a key part of learning how to write a book is to understand when and where you are at your very best.

I recently asked a historian if he had a preferred time for writing. He’s an aristocrat, so his answer, perhaps, was not surprising. “My dear Cornelius, I don’t have a routine.  I write more or less when I want to.”  How lucky to be able to live like that and still earn a crust.  His reply suggests laziness, but in fact he works pretty hard.  He is far from the slouch that his languorous demeanour would suggest.

However, his answer begs the question, whether there is an ideal time in which to write.  In his case, he often starts mid-morning, after an ample breakfast, and then goes on until 6pm or 7pm.  Many writers have a preference for working in the morning, breaking for a short lunch, maybe on their own like Evelyn Waugh, and then persevering until early evening.  Some writers like Jeffrey Archer, begin well before breakfast, and may stop in the afternoon.  That can still give them six or seven hours of writing.  The appeal of writing in the morning is that your mind is clear and your energy level is reasonably high.

The question most people face when learning how to write a book and for memoirists like Rees-Mogg is what to put in and what to leave out. If you’re like Tony or Cherie Blair you’ll put in everything, even embarrassing personal details. Some reviewers have described Tony Blair’s memoir A Journey as weird partly because of this. Or you can take a more serious tone and maintain a scrupulously dignified front, carefully avoiding anything that might raise an eyebrow.

Here are some great examples of how to write a book of memoirs…
